<b>RockShox Pike Fork</b><br />
The Pike is a complete new redesign for RockShox, and the 
All-Mountain fork will be available in 150mm and 160mm travel for the 
26″, 27.5″ and 29″ sizes (29er also gets 140mm), with tapered aluminum 
steerer and 15mm Maxle. The all-new chassis has 35mm stanchions, a 
highly engineered crown and asymmetric lower legs. The asymmetry means 
they added a supporting power bulge by the lower bushings, and continued
 the taper down on the braking side for strength, while the non-braking 
stops 40mm down for weight savings. In addition, the lower leg casting 
on the spring side leg has more volume on the inside than the damping 
side for lightening purposes.<br />

The Pike will come in two different spring systems, the Solo Air and 
Dual  Position Air, and they’ll use the new Charger damper, which comes 
in an  RCT3 and RC versions.<br />

The Charger is an fully bleed cartridge system that uses a extruded  
bladder design, that expands as the fork compresses, which keeps air out
  of the system for consistency and smoothness, and offers good weight  
savings. The RCT3 offers three adjustment modes, open, pedal and lock,  
and has a adjustable low speed compression in open. The simpler RC has  
an open mode to one with increasing compression all the way to lock.  
Both Charger damper versions feature their Rapid Recovery rebound  
damping technology, which keeps the fork high in its stroke in the  
softest part of the spring curve, without packing down from multiple  
successive bumps, letting the fork do the work instead of the rider. The
  Dual Position Air allows 30mm of travel adjustment, and works by  
transferring air between chambers, while the Solo Air is fixed-travel.<br />

<strong> RockShox Monarch Plus Rear Shock</strong><br />

The Monarch Plus uses the Solo Air spring, their RC3 or R damper, and
 Rapid Recovery rebound damping technology. They redid all the damping 
circuit and increased the damper shaft diameter by 1mm to 10mm, so oil 
flow has been increased, for more consistent and quieter ride, and 
tuning opportunities. The RC3 shock lever has three adjustments, open, 
mid and full compression (open, pedal, lock). They added larger volume 
to the negative air spring, to help reduce the amount of force it takes 
on initiate bump movement through the first third of travel. It has some
 nice indention markings on the shaft for sag set up.<br />

A short time ago I did a <a href="http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-gear/rockshox-revelation-rlt-ti-review/">write up on the Rockshox Revelation</a> suspension fork. Well, Rockshox has the back of your bike covered just as well with the <a href="http://www.singletracks.com/mtbreviews/Rock-Shox/Monarch-RT3/7582.html">Monarch RT3</a> which could very well be your next go-to rear shock. Read on to find out why…<br />

The Monarch RT3 comes in a variety of lengths, from 152mm x 31mm all 
the way up to 222mm x 66mm. Rockshox offers three tuning options (low, 
mid, and high) so you can best match the level of dampening to the 
leverage ratio of your ride (typically the higher the ratio the higher 
the tune). On longer versions, you can even order a large volume air 
spring chamber to change the behavior of the air spring itself. This 
gives the rider the choice of a rising rate or a more linear spring 
rate.<br />

The Monarch RT3 offers 3 adjustments. Starting with the Solo air, you
 can easily set the air spring pressure. Laser-etched gradients on the 
side of the low friction hard-anodized 28mm chassis make it is easy to 
set your sag. The beginning stroke rebound is the second adjustment 
which has been improved over the previous model Monarch shock. This 
allows you to manage the small hits on the trail while a factory-set end
 stroke rebound takes care of the bigger hits. The final control is the 
3-step floodgate which allows you to control the compression force.<br />

 <strong>Getting set</strong><br />

My Opus Clutch with 150mm of rear travel uses the 200x50mm Monarch 
and for a slightly plusher ride I went with the high volume option. The 
leverage ratio required the high tune for optimal performance and keeps 
the rebound dial and floodgate dead in the middle of their ranges of 
adjustment. This gives me the ability to tune from there.<br />

Once the three-piece unit was installed (sold separately, and a piece
 of cake to install), it was just a matter of setting the shock to 20% 
sag (which is recommended by Opus). I put on all my gear (hydration pack
 with water, munchies, helmet, knee pads, first aid kit, tubes, etc) and
 jounced the bike around a whole bunch before setting the sag, 
compression, and rebound. After I was convinced the bike had been 
“relaxed” enough, I set the shock setting at 20% sag. For those 
following along at home, just make sure you’re level on your bike and 
not leaning either way too much. Even better, have someone hold the bike
 or at least have a hand-hold nearby to balance yourself.<br />

As far as tuning the floodgate and rebound is concerned, I started 
dead in the middle and went for a few rides to get used to the shock. 
Afterward I turned the rebound two more clicks towards the “rabbit” side
 and found myself perfectly happy in the third setting of the floodgate.<br />

<strong>On the trail</strong><br />

On the trail I really appreciated the simple set-up and ease of use 
of the Rockshox Monarch RT3. The gate lever is big enough that I can 
find it with gloves on without slowing down. The clickers are rather 
positive which meant I never found myself guessing if I made a change or
 not.<br />

As far as performance on the trails and even hitting jumps, I can say
 that I didn’t manage to make the shock fade. Jumping and doing small 
5-foot step downs I found the RT3 controlled the back wheel nicely. The 
settings I chose were perfect for the bike and did a great job at 
keeping the wheel on the trail without too harsh a ride. On rock gardens
 the RT3 did well and kept up with the terrain.<br />

Of course as with any mountain bike shock, set-up is key here – 
adding too much rebound can quickly pack down your suspension. Now there
 are limits to the RT3 and I think I did encounter them when I tried to 
push it with some bigger stuff that’s out there, bottoming out once or 
twice on some not-so-smooth drops. At least I didn’t get a super harsh 
crash in the suspension (although I don’t think prolonged attempts at 
that will be a good thing for the shock or the bike). If you plan on 
getting a bit more daring you may want to consider the Monarch Plus.<br />

For about $255 MSRP you’re getting a good quality rear shock which will 
work great on your XC – Trail  bike without totally depleting your bank 
account (just remember that price doesn’t include mounting hardware).

Almost like a counterpoint to their <a href="http://reviews.mtbr.com/2014-rockshox-vivid-rear-shocks-available-only-for-pro-riders">recent announcement of their high-end (read: not cheap), pro-only Vivid rear shocks</a>,
 RockShox has just announced a new XC fork that offers a lot of solid 
features but won’t break the bank.  The new 30 Gold fork from RockShox 
will sell (aftermarket) starting at $330 and in an effort to appeal to 
all riders, the 30 Gold comes in all 3 mountain bike wheel sizes (26″, 
27.5″ and 29″).  The 30 Gold is the successor to the Recon Silver but is
 much lighter, so it is an even better value.<br />

At 80/100/120 mm of travel, it is definitely an XC oriented fork.  
For this price, certain things are kept simple like the forged aluminum 
crown, straight wall anodized aluminum 30mm upper tubes, 9mm QR axle and
 Magnesium lowers.  However, you do get the Solo Air spring, external 
rebound adjustment and TurnKey lockout.  Weight is VERY competitive, 
especially for this pricepoint.  We only have a couple of pictures right
 now, but we are awaiting more soon.<br />

One thing to note is that two larger wheel sizes come in 100/120mm of
 travel while the 26″ version comes in 80mm/100mm.  And of course, the

 movement earlier in 2013 took many people by surprise. While most 
brands were dabbling with a model or two in their lineups, Giant 
 announced a <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_3">full range</span>
 of the mid-sized wheeled bikes, across nearly their entire lineup. 
While a number of 29” wheeled bikes remained, all 26” wheeled bikes, 
save for the downhill Glory and freeride ReignX, went out the door.<br />
After spending 2 seasons on Giant’s stalwart Reign, I was curious about how their  commitment to the <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_1">mid size</span>
 would pan out, and was more than happy to answer the call of the test 
bike. With its low-key all black style, aesthetics alone push the 
carbon-framed Trance Advanced SX toward the front of the class. Giant 
has a proven formula of smartly spec’d bikes at the right price points, 
and when combined with second-to-none warranty service they are hard to 
overlook.<br />

 Black on black labeling and internally routed cables contribute to the <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_8">bike</span>’s
 sleek aesthetic. The OverDrive2 headtube is proprietary and beefed up 
compared to other brands, Giant claims a 15% increase in torsional 
steering stiffness, although I’m not sure I really notice a difference.<br />

The Trance SX sports the new SRAM X01 drivetrain for those looking to 
stay with the hot trends. But Giant also pays attention to the details: 
the direct mount <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_6">front derailleur</span>
 tab provides the option of multiple front rings for those who so 
choose,and the cover on the direct mount keeps things looking clean. The
 integrated chainstay wrap is also a nice touch, even though clutch 
derailleurs have significantly reduced chain slap. Look closely and 
you’ll also notice ISCG-05 chainguide tabs. Versatility is the name of 
the game when it comes to customizing the bike to suit whatever your 
drivetrain needs dictate. Unfortunately the crank finish already shows 
signs of wear after only a handful of rides.<br />

The Maestro suspension benefis greatly with the addition of the 142x12mm through <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_4">axle wheel</span>
 on the rear and the Fox Float X rear shock. The bump up to the wider 
wheel spacing and through axle drastically improves rear end stiffness 
compared to my previous generation Reign. The new Float X shock offers 
more compression damping throughout the range of its adjustments, 
providing more support early in the travel, helping improve climbing and
 pedalling performance, while also seeming to help resist the harsh 
bottom out that was oh so common on the Reign on big hits.<br />

It’s no secret that Fox’s 2013 34 CTD forks were not their <span class="wlvt289mk8h3" id="wlvt289mk8h3_2">best effort</span>.
 The revamped internals do the trick, however, and the fork exceeded 
expectations. Adjustments provide a noticeable difference in 
performance, and the fork dive that was so common in the 2013 line is 
absent. Giant has taken advantage of the TALAS-5 platform to give us a 
160mm fork that lowers just 20mm to 140 in the low setting, matching the
 140mm rear travel.<br />

 At only 100mm of travel, Giant’s Contact remote adjustable seatpost 
performs fairly reliably, even if it feels a bit lacking in total height
 adjustment when the trail turns down and steep. The offset post also 
puts you back on the bike. Personally I prefer something with less 
offset to help keep the front of the bike down on steep climbs when 
running shorter stems. The Fi’zi:k Gobi XM saddle isn’t the most 
comfortable saddle I’ve ever been on, but it’s better than many OEM 
offerings and quietly goes about its duties.<br />

  The dual bolt clamp on the seatpost binder is a head scratcher – it 
makes simple quick adjustments a thing of the past, and instead you get 
to fiddle around with two bolts. Totally unnecessary, and actually kind 
of annoying.<br />

 Slowing down is handled by Avid’s 4-piston Elixir 9 Trail brakes. With 
both pad contact and reach adjustment, getting the brakes dialed to suit
 your tastes is easy. I’ve had no problems with stopping power on the 
steepest of trails so far.<br />

Random notes; Giant finally got the memo and spec’d a decently short 
70mm stem and 730mm wide bar, Giant’s house-branded products that are 
more than adequate until you decide to upgrade. Receiving the bike 
mid-November, I was also pleasantly surprised to find the standard Rock 
Razor tire on the back end replaced with a Hans Dampf. Riding in plently
 of wet and slimy late fall conditions, it was a welcome upgrade to help
 me maintain rear wheel traction.<br />
While the remote Contact seatpost is stealth routed, it does have the
 trait of extending back to full height whenever you grab the bike by 
the seat for a hike a bike or similar, this means a bit of extra up and 
down if you’re on and off your bike. The remote for the post is however 
extremely minimal and easy to use perched beside the grip. A water 
bottle mount, in a normal on top of the down tube location is also very 
welcome by this tester; they even included a carbon bottle cage for me, 
kudos!<br />

The new Trek / Fox DRCV Shock

There was a lot of info related to the new shock co-developed by Trek and Fox (and produced by Fox) and I thought the <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_4">best way</span> to get it sorted clearly was to talk directly to the man who initiated the project – Trek’s Jose Gonzales.<br />
<hr />
 <b>nsmb – What initiated the DRCV project?  Who came up with the ideas for the two stage can and the unique mount?</b><br />
<b>Jose Gonzales</b> – The DRCV project was initiated because I was not satisfied with the performance of either a <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_7">small volume</span> (std can) or <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_5">large volume</span>
 (XV can) air spring – both of them had compromises which were holding 
back Full Floater suspension performance. This all came to light during 
the development of Full Floater, ABP, etc. I was confident that there 
were significant performance gains to be had by blending the positive 
attributes of both – the liveliness, control and efficiency of a small 
volume air spring and the mid-stroke “push through” and more linear 
finish rate of a large volume air spring. But it was key to control when
 the large volume came into play. I wanted to make sure we got rid of 
the “hammock” effect that large volume shocks are notorious for, and 
which makes a shock feel “dead” due to the <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_2">super flat</span> spring rate. I felt that there was too much focus on dampers and not enough emphasis being put on air spring manipulation.<br />

I conceived the DRCV concept of having two separate <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_8">air spring</span>
 chambers with a dividing member. This dividing member would also serve 
as the housing for a valve that would control when the second chamber 
would activate, which would be based on where the shock was in its 
travel. I also conceived the sides mount design so we could open up the 
center core of the shock. This allowed for an in-line two chamber design
 and opened up the shock’s core for air volume and the placement of the <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_3">position sensitive</span>
 valve. Additionally, I was also after being able to independently tune 
the primary spring volume from the secondary spring volume and from when
 the valve would activate. In other words, I wanted to decouple all 3 
for maximum tuning of each one without compromising something else. The 
other thing I was after is the elimination of the bushing style mounting
 system on the rocker link mount (which is very dynamic), replacing it 
with bearings. This would reduce bushing drag and improve small bump and
 high frequency terrain response.<br />

 design and concept to Fox and explained what we were after and why. We 
worked very closely together on the project and they contributed 
significantly to making it a real product. During the prototype testing 
phase, we realized that set-up was going to be complicated for the end 
user if we didn’t come up with a different system to control the two 
chamber function. That’s when Dennis Wooten at Fox had an enlightening 
moment and he conceived the plunger valve to control transfer and the 
dual Schrader valve filling feature. From there, it was a bunch of field
 testing time to fine tune the performance characteristics for each 
application.<br />

<b>nsmb – Which technology belongs to Trek and which belongs to Fox?</b>

<b>Jose </b>-<b> </b>Trek owns the general DRCV 
design and we have filed patent applications to protect it. The two 
in-line air chambers that are divided by a dividing member belong to 
Trek. This dividing member may and may not have a valve to control 
activation of the second chamber and to manipulate flow rate. 
Additionally, the dividing member serves as one of the shock’s mounting 
points. The Trek design also calls out that the valve is tuned to 
activate at a pre-determined point and that it can manipulate flow rate.
 It also calls out that we can decouple the tuning of the different 
chambers, valve activation, etc.<br />

Fox
 rightly owns the plunger valve design and the dual Schrader valve 
filling design. Because both of these features were conceived by Fox due
 to DRCV, we have an agreement in place that Fox will not use these 
designs in any other application if Trek does not abandon the use of 
DRCV…which isn’t going to happen.<br />

<b>nsmb -What riders will benefit most from DRCV?</b>

<b>Jose </b>- Really, all riders do because it just makes 
for a much better air spring system. But the longer the travel the more 
beneficial because air volume inherently grows with increased shock 
travel. The more travel…the more volume…which leads to a flat <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_6">spring rate</span>…which…well it’s all covered at the start of this discussion.<br />

<b>nsmb – Will DRCV be useful on the way UP on rough terrain?</b>
<br />
<b>Jose </b>- Absolutely! Its holds the rider up better 
when the weight transfer is to the rear, but at the same time maintains 
its liveliness and its ability to respond to the terrain. One frequent 
comment that we heard when people ride the 2010 Remedy with DRCV is that
 they can’t believe how well it climbs, especially without using 
ProPedal. The other big bonus, and why we timed the introduction of DRCV
 on Trek bikes as we did, is that DRCV and Boost Valve damping 
completely complement each other. The performance attributes of the two 
technologies go hand in hand to give an amazing rear suspension feel and
 unparalleled performance characteristics…well beyond what a standard 
air spring shock using Boost Valve can offer.<br />

<b>36 SERIES BECOMES A TWO-MODEL LONG-TRAVEL LINEUP, WITH OPTIONS:</b> You read that right, the 36 series (36mm wide stanchions) now has two <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_4">travel options</span>, both available in TALAS format, with the longest bumping up to a massive 180mm!<br />
In the pic above, you’ll see these beasts get extended lowers for 
more bushing overlap with the sliders, enhancing stiffness, and keeping 
overall height lower, which helps maintain a lower <span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_7">bar height</span>.Â 
 The 36 series forks are only available with 20mm thru axles, and the 
180 has completely new crown, sliders and lowers to handle the long 
travel in a single-crown design while retaining the stiffness Fox 
wanted.Â  Both the 160mm and 180mm are available in Float, TALAS and 
Vanilla feature options.<br />
Interestingly, the 36 160 gets the FIT <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">RLC</span> RC2 damper only in the Vanilla (<span class="muys488ujdud" id="muys488ujdud_8">steel spring</span>)
 option, while the 36 180 gets the top-end RC2 damper with both low- and
 high-speed compression damping across all three versions.<br />
<b>MORE OPTIONS WITH 15mm THRU AXLES:</b> The TALAS 29er 
fork is only available with a 15mm thru axle, and for the 32 TALAS, all 
of the 140mm travel (max) come in either 15mm or standard 9mm QR, 
anything that goes longer than 140 is 15mm axle only.Â  While we’re on 
the subject of axles, on the short 80mm travel end of the forks, there’s
 only one (32 FIT RLC) that offers a 15mm axles, they’re all using 9mm 
QR, but once you get to 100mm, you have the option of running either.<br />

amount of force required to get the fork moving, and the new rendition 
promises “instant” activation with no second-strike harshness.Â  In 
other words, if you remember the Fox forks from a couple years ago that 
felt locked out until you hit something, it’s like that.Â  Only better.<br />

How’s it better?Â  A new BrassMass assembly and timer circuit (oil path,
 not electronic) is designed to react immediately.Â  It’s the same 
premise as what you’d find on the Specialized BRAIN shock in that a bump
 coming from the shock is required to open the oil flow, and Fox says 
this new version is quicker (the word “instant” is thrown around a lot) 
and more responsive to continuous input.Â  In a seeming contradiction of
 terms, the literature says “the patented timer circuit (allows) the 
BrassMass to return to the closed position almost instaneously for max 
pedaling efficientcy, while still providing control of the BrassMass 
that prevents confusion and premature closure eliminating second-strike 
harshness.”Â  Well, it may not prevent confusion, but Fox seems to know 
what they’re doing and they say the design is based on pro rider 
feedback and testing.Â  The old stuff felt pretty good, but it did seem 
to want to closeÂ  (ie. firm up) a little quickly, so it’ll be 
interesting to see how these improvements play out on the trail.<br />

This chart shows the difference in low speed compression curve versus
 their FIT RLC compression damper.Â  Basically what you’re looking at is
 the firmness you’re going to feel before it feels like their normal FIT
 shock.Â  When the setting’s at 0, it’s basically locked out and you’d 
really have to drop off something big to open it up.Â  The good news is,
 it’ll open up even in full “lockout” mode, so you won’t destroy your 
wrists and elbows.Â  As you dial back the Terralogic through its 15 
detents, you’re bringing it closer to fully open, and the action won’t 
feel as firm as rest.<br />
If you’re regularly bombing through stuff and you want the most 
supple suspension, Terralogic’s probably not for you, and that’s why Fox
 is only offering it on their F-Series (and F29) and TALAS (yep, TALAS 
29, too) forks…it’s a cross-country and race oriented technology that 
may prove useful on trail bikes that have to climb or sprint 
occasionally.Â  Across the fork ranges that offer it, it’s considered 
the top end (as the prices shown at the end of this post suggest), and 
it adds about 100g to the fork’s weight versus the FIT RLC damper.<br />

On the Terralogic forks, the settings are reversed.Â  <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Compression</span>
 Rebound damping is up top (red knob), and the Terralogic settings are 
controlled from the bottom, meaning on-the-fly adjustments aren’t 
possible.Â  This, along with the fact that you can’t get the F29 
Terralogic model with a tapered headtube, are kind of bummers, but given
 that they flip-flopped the FIT cartridge this year, maybe they’ll do 
the same with Terralogic for 2012.Â  (<i>In case you’re curious as to 
why the tapered thing is a bummer, it’s because Niner’s new Jet9 has a 
tapered headtube but is designed around an 80mm travel fork.Â  Sure, 
that’s just one example, but hey.</i>)</div>

<b>ALL-NEW VANILLA RC SHOCK:</b> Budget 
downhillers/freeriders and privateers rejoice!Â  Fox has brought most of
 their World-Cup-winning DHX technology down to the Vanilla level with 
the new Van RC shock.Â  It’s a coilover design with piggy back oil 
reservoir and has external low-speed compression and rebound settings 
(blue = compression, red dial at bottom = rebound).Â  At just 387g, it’s
 not too heavy considering, and you can dial down the coil spring 
preload as with most coil shocks, too.<br />
The other news (not pictured) is that the Float RP23 rear shock will 
have a remote lever available to turn the ProPedal on or off.Â  It’ll 
use the same lockout lever as the F-Series forks do (<i>but not simultaneously, as in you’ll need one lever for the rear, one for the front, if that’s how you roll</i>)<br />

monstrous 40 dual crown fork gets the same adhesive backed cosmetic 
changes as the rest of Fox’s 2011 lineup, along with the inverted FIT

the FIT RC2 cartridge, the compression controls are up top, which also 
improves clearance with the rebound knob’s new design.Â  With these
